The next step in building the ultimate Ruger 10/22 is deciding what kind of barrel to buy. Although there are many people who like the look and feel of the lighter weight sporter and carbine barrels, for this post we are going to explore the world of the heavy barrel. There are lots of terms used to describe the heavy target style barrels but the most common is bull barrel. Some people refer to them as heavy target or heavy varmint barrels. This is most often referring to the .920 inch diameter barrels on the market today. There are number sizes available in both width and length and which one you choose depends on the style and use of your gun.

Here are a few of the different “bull” barrels available to add to your custom Ruger 10/22.

Clark Custom Guns offers a drop in Target Match Barrel which provides for more rigidity but is lighter weight. The barrel’s feature full length, extra-wide flutes which help to keep the overall weight down and quickly dissipate excess heat resulting in greater shot-to-shot consistency. Another option would be the Match-Grade Barrel by Shilen. The expert craftsmanship of this barrel provides for the match grade accuracy competition shooters and hobbyist alike search for when building their personal custom 10/22. Shilen’s match-grade barrels are fully machined and finished with a target crown. These 10/22 barrels feature a straight cylinder with a “Bentz” match chamber. These barrels should only be used with match-grade ammunition.
